OUR STORY
Emerald Hill was popular with the Peranakan families in Singapore during the 1900s, where it was sectioned into 26 private housing estates. After being declared as a conservation area in 1985, the 6 shophouses facing Orchard Road were renamed “Peranakan Place” as part of the pilot project to conserve the significant history of the area.
With the takeover of Peranakan Place by the Ong family in the 1990s, they saw the potential in the unused alleyway between 2 of the shophouses, transforming it into what is now known as Alleybar, which opened in 1999.
Surrounded by the rich Peranakan heritage and filled with authentic historical artefacts from the former Peranakan Museum, Alleybar pays homage to the Nyonya culture by incorporating signature Nyonya flavours into our cocktails. Complemented by a Peranakan-inspired menu, Alleybar is one of Singapore’s oldest heritage bars, and a cocktail bar not to be missed.
